If you want to lose weight, you should try making cabbage soup a part of your diet. Cabbage is the ideal food for weight loss, especially when it’s consumed in soup form.
If you replace one of your daily meals with a bowl of cabbage soup, you’ll see your weight start to drop in no time.
With that said, you’re not going to want to buy cabbage soup from the store. If you want cabbage soup that will actually help you to slim down, you should learn how to make it yourself.
You’ll need to find the right original cabbage soup diet recipe.
The Original Cabbage Soup Diet Recipe
If you’re not an experienced cook, you won’t want to start out with an advanced recipe. You should look for something simple that you can easily prepare.
Thankfully, there are a number of cabbage soup recipes that are incredibly easy. You don’t have to be an expert cook to make these recipes. There are even crockpot cabbage soup recipes. It’s okay if you aren’t a great cook; you can still make your own cabbage soup.
Look for recipes that match your skill level. If you can find that, you’ll be able to prepare soup without any problems.
Here’s the recipe that most people follow when using this diet:
- 6 large green onions.
- 2 green peppers.
- 1 to 2 Cans of Diced Tomatoes.
- 1 Bunch Celery
- 1 Packet of Onion Soup Mix
- 1 to 2 Bouillon Cubes for Flavor (For Low-Sodium Option try Vegetable Flavor)
- 1 large Head of Cabbage
- 1 8-oz can of V8 Juice (This is Optional, and will add Sodium as an FYI)
Not All Cabbage Soups Can Help with Weight Loss
Not every cabbage soup is created for people following a cabbage soup diet. Although cabbage is very low in calories, some cabbage soups are packed with calories.
A cream-based soup, for instance, is going to have plenty of calories.
When you look at different recipes, you should see how diet friendly they are. Find the kinds of recipes that will aid you in your diet.
Basically, you just want to avoid recipes that use any ingredients that will cause trouble for you, and throw off your weight loss goals.
Look for Low Sodium
When you look at different cabbage soup recipes, you should check to see how much sodium they contain. In many cases, soup recipes contain a lot of sodium.
Going over the daily recommended allowance for sodium could sabotage your weight loss efforts.
Because of this, you can’t just look for a tasty cabbage soup recipe. You also need to find a recipe that is low sodium. If you can control the amount of sodium that you consume, you should be able to shed your extra pounds quickly.
Try More Than One Recipe
If you’re going to be eating cabbage soup all the time, you’re not going to want to use the same recipe all of the time. Instead, you should give yourself some variety. If you have a few ways to prepare cabbage soup, you won’t get sick of it.
Cabbage soup is a lot more versatile than people think. It pairs well with other low-calorie vegetables, like celery. It can be served hot or cold. You should be able to find a number of recipes that appeal to you.
Put the to the Test
Sometimes, it takes a few tries before you find the right recipes. Turn your kitchen into a testing place.
You can try making a number of different cabbage soups there.
If you don’t love one of the soups you make, that’s okay. You can just move on to a new recipe. Once you find a recipe you love, you should freeze your leftovers.
You can reheat them whenever you want to have a new bowl of cabbage soup.
Through trial and error, you should be able to find a cabbage soup that your really like.
Other Diets to Consider
While the cabbage soup diet may be great for short term weight loss, it’s not going to be a long-term solution for most folks.
Because of that, we can’t endorse it for weight loss. We would rank the cabbage soup diet in more of the fad diet category like some of the other soup diets out there.
If you’re looking for a better way to lose weight, there are plenty of diets that we recommend, that have been proven to be safe and healthy ways to lose weight.
A few of these include:
- Mayo Clinic Diet
- South Beach Diet
- Personal Trainer Food
- Ketogenic Diet
- Weight Watchers Digital
You really can’t go wrong with any of the diets on this list, in my opinion, but you will just have to read up on these and/or others to find one that fits your needs and lifestyle.
If you’re looking for quick recommendation, then I’d check out the Mayo Clinic Diet (get the details here). There are more than just a few reasons that make it a good place to start, but here are some of the main reasons that I really like this program:
- Priced Right – Get Started for Around $3 per Week
- A Workout and Dieting Plan You Can Follow for Life
- No Fads or Gimmicks – Just Healthy Eating and Lifestyle Choices
- Safe and Steady Weight Loss
That said, this isn’t the end all and be all of diets, so if you don’t think this is the one for you, check out some of the others on our list, or look around until you find the right health program for you.

That said, if you’re looking for a diet that is sustainable over the long term and is something that can help you lose weight safely and effectively, then I recommend checking out the Mayo Clinic Diet.
It’s a much more sustainable option than a soup diet, in my opinion.
