If you’re curious to learn more about how Drew Carey lost so much weight, then you’ve come to the right place.
In this guide, we’re going to take a closer look at the methods and techniques Drew Carey relied on upon in order to lose a considerable amount of weight in a relatively short period of time.
With this in mind, let’s explore the subject in further detail.
Who is Drew Carey?
First of all, Drew Carey is a popular American actor and comedian, who is perhaps best known for his roles as a gameshow host, particularly on the Drew Carey Show and the improv show called Whose Line Is It Anyway.
On top of that, he’s been the host of the Price Is Right since 2007.
His Weight Loss Story
However, while most TV owners are probably well aware of who Drew Carey is, few people will know about his considerable weight loss achievements, and for many years, he was quite secretive about the methods and techniques that were used to achieve the success.
Yet in several interviews over the years he’s decided to confess how he managed to lose a great deal of weight, so let’s learn more about how we did it.
The Breaking Point
To start with, Drew Carey initially weighed around 262 pounds, and after becoming fed up with the excess weight he was carrying, he decided to set a goal of losing around 90 pounds.
The Transformation Begins
In addition to weighing 262 pounds, Drew also had a size 44 waist, but by the end of the year, he had managed to reduce this number down to size 34, and he achieved a corresponding weight of roughly 170 pounds.
A very impressive achievement, indeed!
Here’s Drew briefly explaining some of his weight loss tips:
How He Did it
Of course, many people were shocked to see such a transformation in a relatively short period of time, and when asked what his secret was, he confessed that his commitment to a healthier diet and regular exercise over the course of 12 months was the only real secret that worked for him.
On top of that, he made great use of a low-carb diet strategy that involved cutting out virtually all of the pasta and bread that he used to regularly enjoy.
Furthermore, he made sure to replace all soda drinks, such as Coca-Cola, with a healthy water alternative instead.
Tricks for Staying Motivated
- “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.”
Perhaps one of the most difficult aspects of replicating this kind of success is finding the motivation to stick to your weight loss goals over the long haul, especially when you’re really craving some tasty pasta for dinner, or perhaps a delicious soda drink after a tough workout.
But one of the smartest tricks Drew used to motivate himself was to remember a phrase he had learned from Kate Moss, namely ‘nothing tastes as good as skinny feels’.
Armed with this motivating quote, he managed to subdue any cravings for long enough to lose a considerable amount of weight.
Cheat Meals are “OK”
Interestingly, Drew Carey is always sure to point out that he didn’t always stick to his intended diet 24/7, and he would still allow himself to enjoy the occasional cheat meal on occasion.
But the tactic of having a specific ‘cheat day’ was a sure-fire winner for him, and he would often make a list of things he wanted to enjoy on his cheat day, which made it easier to forgo those tasty delights today and instead enjoy them on the designated cheat day.
A Wake-Up Call: Previous Weight Loss Attempts
It’s also worth noting that Drew Carey had attempted to lose weight before, back in 2001, after he was sent to the hospital with unusual chest pains.
During this hospital visit, it was discovered that he had clogged arteries, and he had to have an angioplasty operation to keep him in good health.
It’s certainly true that health scares such as this one can go a long way towards motivating someone to stick to their weight loss goals even when they have struggled to do so in the past, and this certainly helped to give him the necessary motivation he needed to maintain his new diet and workout plan.
Exercise Helped Too
Furthermore, when he was losing weight after becoming the host of the Price Is Right, he worked with a personal trainer to increase his exercise frequency until he was working out six days a week.
The exercise he was performing was mostly comprised of walking and running, and he would aim to perform at least 2 to 3 days of 45-minute intense cardio a week while he was training to perform a 10k run.
How You Can Get Similar Results
Want to lose a lot of weight like Drew did? Of course, you can follow a very similar plan that he used, just by doing a few basics:
- Eating Clean
- Getting Some Exercise
- Power Through Any Setbacks
But, this is often harder to put into action than you might think. If you’re someone, like me, who has struggled with their weight, then you may need some extra help along the way, and that’s OK.
If you’re looking for a diet or program that can help give you an edge, I’d recommend checking out the new Weight Watchers Digital program (check out my review here), for a few simple reasons:
- It’s Been Proven to Work
- It’s Easy to Follow
- It’s Super Affordable
Of course, this is just one idea if you’re looking for diets to try, and it won’t be the end all and be all for everyone, but other celebs, including Oprah, have had some pretty good success using it.
In any case, just some food for thought.
At the end of the day, a big part of Drew’s success came from the motivation he was able to summon.
When he discovered that his additional weight was putting him at increased risk of diabetes, and combined with the fact that his father died of a heart attack while he was in his 40s, Drew found the motivation to dedicate himself to achieving the weight loss goals that he’d set for himself at the beginning of the year.
Overall, it’s clear to see that Drew Carey’s weight loss story is very inspirational, and it’s certainly possible for a determined person to replicate his success if they try some of these same methods.
