My Nutrisystem Review: How I Lost 30+ Pounds
Nutrisystem has established itself as the best meal delivery diet program on the planet, but does it really work? I have tried the diet multiple times now, and I can confirm that it does, in fact, produce amazing weight loss results if you follow their plan correctly and stay committed to the program.
With that in mind, they’ve made a lot of changes over the last couple of years, so let’s take a look at what you can expect from their latest weight loss program – with our latest Nutrisystem Turbo13 review.
2018 Update: I Signed Up for Nutrisystem Turbo13 Again – Were the Results as Good this Time Around?
I first signed up for Nutrisystem several years ago and had awesome results using their program. In fact, I lost about 30 pounds the first time I tried it (read the full story below), and since then I’ve been able to maintain my weight loss with a combination of healthy eating and exercise.
This past January, I decided to sign up again, however, after packing on about 10 pounds around the holidays. While I didn’t need to lose as much weight this time around, I still had a lot of success using their program and had a couple of big takeaways from the latest version of Nutrisystem.
There are many reasons that I love Nutrisystem, but these are the biggest factors that make it my top-rated weight loss program:
- Affordable – Plans Start at Less than $10 per Day!
- Convenient – They Deliver all of Your Diet Food Right to Your Door
- Better Results with Turbo 13 – New Programs Helps Your Lose Weight Faster than Ever!

Here are a few other things I learned about Nutrisystem:
1: Affordable & Easy to Follow
For my latest run with Nutrisystem, I signed up for their Basic plan, and as you can see from my receipt at the end of this review, it cost me less than $300 for a full month’s worth of food. Compare that to your average grocery bill these days, and that seems like a pretty good deal to me.
You do need to buy some fresh vegetables on fruit when using the Nutrisystem diet, but even with that, the plan still is still an affordable way to reach your weight loss goals when you compare it your typical food costs.
Plus, they show you the exact system to follow to reach your weight loss goals – follow the plan they send, and you will lose weight.
2: Lose More Weight with Turbo 13 (Update to Lean 13)
At the start of the year, Nutrisystem launched their brand new Turbo 13 program. Using this system you can lose up to 13 pounds and 7 inches during your first month on the program (it’s up to 15 pounds for men!). To get started they’ll send you a Turbo Takeoff box with your first order. This is designed to help you jump-start your weight loss, and includes a selection of foods and shakes for your first week.
This last time I signed up, I had a weight loss goal of 10 pounds – with this new system I had pretty much hit my goal during the first week. This means, I only needed to use Nutrisystem for 1 month, and then switched to their Turbo Shakes for my second month, along with a healthy diet and exercise plan.
We’re more than halfway through the year now, and I’ve still been able to keep the weight off.
3: Bottom Line: Nutrisystem Works.
This may sound obvious, but I know a lot of folks are probably wondering if Nutrisystem actually works. The answer is YES – if you follow the program as they designed it. That means, sticking to their meal plan for however long it takes to reach your weight loss goals.

My Original Review:
My Nutrisystem Story: A Journey to Better Health
When I finally decided to sign on with Nutrisystem, my health was not in good shape. To be perfectly honest, I had been eating and drinking way too much, and in the span of about 3 or 4 years, I had easily packed on an additional 30 pounds of mostly fat.
The crazy thing is the weight gain really snuck up on me. I’m not sure if I was just in total denial at the time, but I really didn’t see it coming. It wasn’t until I saw some pictures from a New Year’s party that I realized how fat I had actually gotten.
Prior to that, I had always been able to maintain a pretty healthy weight, and my weight had been pretty easy to manage most of life – I typically felt healthy, could keep up with my peers in sports, and really never viewed myself as being overweight.
But, that all changed once I hit my mid-20s. As my friends began settling down and starting families, I continued the partying and overindulgence of my college days, and as my metabolism slowed I really began to pack on the pounds. Most of this was due to my terrible diet – back then I considered eating just one quarter-pounder with cheese and fries as being healthy.
The big wake-up call came when I finally decided to visit my primary care doctor. I hadn’t been since high school, so I really wasn’t sure what to expect.
The results of the visit came as a shock, to say the least. In no particular order I found out that I was now tipping the scales at more than 200 pounds (this after staying within about 165-170 lbs. for most of my college days), had high blood pressure, my cholesterol was through the roof, and some of the other markers on my blood test came back as “abnormal.”
My doctor didn’t hold: “You need a lifestyle change,” were his exact words and I left his office knowing that I had to take action, or my entire life could be in jeopardy.
It All Started with a Review from Dan Marino…
I spent the next couple of weeks feeling depressed and embarrassed, which I masked by eating and drinking even more. It was the middle of winter, and I was laying on the couch late one night when a Nutrisystem commercial came on TV. Dan Marino, the legendary Miami Dolphins Quarterback, was talking about how he had lost more than 20 pounds on Nutrisystem, and for some reason, his words stuck with me (see the commercial below).
Marino was one of the biggest names in the NFL as a kid, and here he was on TV talking about a diet plan that had worked for him, and he actually seemed genuine and believable.
I’m definitely not one of those people who stays up late at night ordering things I see on TV, and quite honestly I usually skip the commercials, so it was unusual that this particular ad happened to catch my eye in the first place
Whatever the reason, I was convinced it was what I needed. I grabbed my laptop and began researching everything I could about the program – how much did it cost, what was the food like, how long did it take to lose weight, and most importantly: Did it Actually Work? During my research, I found a lot of positive reviews about Nutrisystem, and I knew it was time to give it a try!
My Results with Nutrisystem
What I found convinced me that not only did Nutrisystem work, but more importantly it would work for me: It was affordable, convenient, tons of people reported great results online, and they guaranteed the weight loss.
After doing a little research, I decided it was right for me and decided to sign up. A week or two later I received my first shipment of food and was ready to get started.
Long story short, I lost 30+ pounds with the help of the Nutrisystem diet. I was probably around 210 pounds when I finally decided to jump on the bandwagon, and my weight was going nowhere but up at that point.
I’ll be totally honest too – when that first shipment of meals came and I actually began following the plan, things were not easy. I had become accustomed to overeating at every meal, while also eating anything I wanted – lots of McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and pretty much any other fast food option you can think of.
When I first began eating portions that were calorie-controlled, it was definitely a struggle. BUT, my mind and body gradually began adjusting, and by the start of the second week, I actually felt satisfied with their meals.
Eventually, this became the norm for me, and over time I have been able to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine.
Was My Overall Review Positive?
Starting Weight: More than 200 lbs. (Keeping in mind that I weighed 135 pounds when I graduated high school.)
Ending Weight: About 175 lbs.
Current Weight: Hovers around 162 lbs.
Nowadays, I try to stay as close to 160 as possible, and I am usually able to maintain that goal, give or take a pound or two.
That being said, I still utilize diets like Nutrisystem or The South Beach Diet from time-to-time, when I feel like I need a re-charge, or to quickly burn off some extra weight.
A good example of this is around the holidays (see above), like Thanksgiving or Christmas when it’s easy to pack on an extra 5 or 10 pounds. When this happens I’ll sign up again, and use the diet for a month or two, just to get things back on track.
My most recent order included a month’s supply of the Basic Plan, which helped me drop more than 10 pounds.
After reaching my goal, I transitioned to a plan that includes their Turbo Shakes, healthy foods that I prepare on my own, and a regular exercise routine.
While their Basic plan worked for me for me, they have several options to choose from.
What’s Inside Your First Nutrisystem Shipment?
Picking the Right Nutrisystem Plan
When you sign up for Nutrisystem, you will have three main plans to choose from:
- Uniquely Yours
The Basic option is their most affordable plan and starts at just $9.82 per day. Core starts at $10.54 per day, and Uniquely Yours comes runs $11.96 per day.
If you’re on a tighter budget, then the Basic will absolutely produce great results and is a plan that I have had success with. When you’re on this plan, Nutrisystem will build a menu for you from some of their most popular food items. I found that there was plenty of variety on this plan, but if you want to have more control over your menu, then I’d recommend upgrading to either the Core or Uniquely Yours plans.
It’s also important to note that Uniquely Yours gets you access to the Nutrisystem Frozen Foods menu. These are some of their better tasting foods, in my opinion, and if you can afford the additional monthly fee, it’s definitely worth it. You can even have ice cream for dessert with the frozen menu.
The big takeaway here: Pick a plan that fits your budget and dietary needs (they have specialty plans for vegetarians and diabetics), and know that ALL of their plans are going to help you lose weight when used correctly.
Does the Nutrisystem Food Taste Good?
When you sign up for Nutrisystem, it’s important to go into it with the right mindset: If you’re expecting 5-star cuisine, then this probably isn’t the diet for you. But, if you’re realistic with your expectations, the food actually tastes pretty darn good.
There is a ton of variety, the meals are quick and easy to make, and they even have frozen options that take the quality up another notch.
Here’s a quick sampling of some of the foods they offer for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. We have a much more in-depth write-up on their full food menu here.
- Buttermilk Waffles
- Cinnamon Roll
- Double Chocolate Muffin
- Granola Cereal
- Homestyle Pancakes
- Chicken Mozzarella Melt
- Red Beans & Rice
- Southwest Fiesta Melt
- Tuna Salad
- Chicken Parmesan
- Broccoli & Cheese Stuffed Chicken Breast
- Meatballs in Marinara
- Lasagna with Meat Sauce
- Thick Crust Pizza
- Turbo / NutriCrush Shakes
- Chocolate Brownie Sundae
- Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt Nut Bar
- Chocolate Flavored Pretzels
- Ice Cream Sandwich
This is just a small sampling of some of the foods you’ll be eating when on the diet. You can view their full menu at the official Nutrisystem website.
How Long Does it Take for Nutrisystem to Work?
This was a big question for me when I started looking at other reviews of Nutrisystem, and the short and simple answer is that it really just depends how much weight you need to lose.
I was able to reach my “realistic goal” for weight loss in about 3 months, and this was largely due to the Nutrisystem meal plans, but also an increase in the amount of exercise I was getting.
Ultimately, I wanted to make a goal of losing about 10 pounds per month. For me, this was very doable following their diet plan. The results are going to be different for everyone, but if you have 20, 30 lbs, or more to lose, then I would expect to be on the diet for at least two months. If after that time
The results are going to be different for everyone, but if you have 20, 30 lbs, or more to lose, then I would expect to be on the diet for at least two months. If after that time you feel like you have established decent eating habits, then you may decide that it’s time to come up with a healthy eating plan on your own. Remember, too, that Nutrisystem offers expert counselors who you can talk to, and they can help you decide if you’re ready to transition off the program.
In my case, once I reached my weight loss goal, I had established a routine for how much I needed to eat each day, so I was comfortable developing a plan of my own. decided to enter “maintenance mode”.
These days I am typically able to maintain a healthy weight just by eating the right foods (for me that’s a diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables) and getting enough exercise, which is also good for things like hypertension and high cholesterol – both of these issues are an absolute must for me.
I’ve also worked hard to curb my alcohol consumption, which means not having more than a drink or two (max), and only during social gatherings.
Final Thoughts on Nutrisystem
As someone who has lost more than 30 pounds using the Nutrisystem program, I can tell you that it absolutely works. I highly recommend it to anyone who has 10 or pounds to lose. who likes the idea of having a system that is easy to follow, is
It’s perfect for anyone who likes the idea of having a system that is easy to follow, cost-effective, and produces awesome results.

While we hope to have most of your questions about Nutrisystem with the review above, there may still be a few other things worth pointing out, and we’re going to break them all down here.
Here’s a list of some of the most common questions we get about Nutrisystem, along with their answers.
How many calories a day do you get on Nutrisystem?
When you’re following the Nutrisystem program, you can expect to eat between 1200 and 1500 calories per day. They stick to this range because research has shown that this is a healthy way to lose between 1 and 2 pounds each week.
The best part is, though, you don’t have to do any calorie counting – just eat the Nutrisystem food and watch the weight melt off.
Do You Have to Eat Nutrisystem for Every Meal – What if I Want to Dine Out?
While you’re going to get the best weight loss results by eating the Nutrisystem foods for the majority of your meals and snacks, they give you the option of taking a meal, or even a day off, with their “flex meals.”
This means if you want to dine out with friends or family, or just cook a delicious home-cooked meal on your own, you can!
The best part is, Nutrisystem has guides for both grocery shopping and dining out, so you never have to worry about which groceries to buy or what foods to go with on the restaurant menu. They even have pre-approved meal options at many of the more popular restaurants around – think Applebee’s, Chili’s, or Olive Garden, just to name a few.
Do They Have Meatless Options?
Good news for vegetarians! Nutrisystem has a vegetarian menu, and it features many of the same foods form my review above.
That means you get to choose from a large menu, pick from a variety of foods on their frozen menu, and still lose a bunch of weight.
Nutrisystem doesn’t currently offer a plan for vegans.
Do They Have Separate Nutrisystem Plans for Men & Women?
Yes, the Nutrisystem plans vary for men and women. Their program for guys is called Nutrisystem Turbo for Men, and it is specifically designed to meet the caloric needs for most guys. Men eat more food when following the Nutrisystem program, so their plans cost a bit more than those for women.
Beyond the caloric difference there really isn’t a huge difference between Nutrisystem for men or women, and both have a lot of positive reviews.
What About People with Diabetes?
If you’re a diabetic, don’t worry – Nutrisystem D has all of your weight loss needs covered. Their program is designed to help you keep your blood sugar in check, while also keeping you on track to reah your weight loss goals.
Of course, consult with your doctor before signing up, just to make sure you’re healthy enough for their diet plan.
