Our Rad Power Bikes Experience

Before we dive into all of the models Rad Power Bikes currently offer, I wanted to quickly share my experience so far with their bikes.

As a Rad owner, I can give you an honest look at two of their most popular models: The RadRover and the RadWagon.

Hopefully, this will help you decide whether or not these are the right eBikes for you.

Why We Chose Rad

If you’ve done any research on electric bikes, then there’s a good chance that you’ve come across Rad Power Bikes during your search.

That was where I found myself last winter, anyway.

I had spent the following summer commuting to work on a Honda Ruckus (a 50cc gas-powered scooter), but after seeing all of the fun my officemate was having riding an electric bicycle to work everyday, I was ready to make the switch.

I started looking for eBike reviews online, and honestly felt overwhelmed and had no idea what I was even looking for. Most of them seemed way overpriced, and after a few days of searching I was ready to throw in the towel – I certainly didn’t want to spend more than what I had paid for the Ruckus on a bike, which was starting to seem unavoidable…until I found

Finally, I had found a website that had a great selection of high-quality, and affordable bikes. I spent the next few months thinking about making the purchase, and then in April, I finally decided to pull the trigger.

The eBikes We Bought: Rad Rover and Rad Wagon

our rad rover and power wagon parked with the mountains in the background

We bought a RadWagon so we could take our daughters along on rides, and a RadRover for commuting to work.

I was going to buy the RadCity, but after talking with a customer support rep, I decided to go with the Rover for its added versatility and extra power.

I never thought I’d be a fat tire bike kind of guy, but wow, am I happy I opted for it – they’re so much fun, and you can pretty much take them anywhere.

How Much Do Rad Power Bikes Cost?

Depending on which Rad model(s) you buy, the prices range from $1699 to $1799. If you decide to go with their Rad Burro industrial trike, it starts at $5699. We have much more info and pricing options for each bike below.

Why I Recommend Rad Power Bikes

I could bore you with a bunch technical specs on these bikes, but I’m going to cut to the chase here – if you want a high-quality electric bike that’s affordable, has a great battery life, and is seriously fun to ride, then you can’t go wrong with Rad.

Here are just a few of the factors that make Rad Power Bikes a top choice if you’re looking for a great eBike:

Great Battery for the Price

They powered with a high-quality Samsung lithium battery, that has been more than enough for commuting back and forth to work. They list the range at between 20 and 40 miles, which should be more than enough juice for most commutes, but if you need more range they also sell spare batteries and they’re very easy to swap out.

So Much Fun to Ride

I’ve never had more fun riding a bike – seriously. With the pedal assist, you can fly on these things. They come preloaded with a top speed of 20 mph without pedaling, but if you’re really cranking it, you can definitely go faster than that.

You’ll be amazed at the get-up-go they have, though!

They’re Awesome if You Have Kids

Taking our kids up the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park on our Rad Wagon

If you get the RadWagon, you can take the whole family along on rides. We added some accessories to ours – the Caboose rack, the Thule Yepp Maxi seat for our 2 year old, and a seat pad I found on Amazon for our 7 year old to sit on.

Our kids absolutely love riding on the back of the wagon, and it’s honestly changed our lives. We live up a pretty big hill in our town, which used to prevent us from going on many rides with our little ones.

We had a tow-behind hooked up to our mountain bike, but it was grueling getting back to our house after going on a ride.

That all changed with our new bikes. Now, we zip into town, and zip right up the hill on our way home.

We still break a sweat, but I don’t feel like I’m going to have a heart attack when I get to the top of the hill, which is a nice bonus.

I Actually Look Forward to My Work Commute

My RadRover is so much fun to ride to work, I actually get excited to my morning commute now! Plus, when you take finding a parking spot out of the equation, I can make it to my office faster than I can in a car.

Priced Right

After doing a ton of research on electric bikes, I’m convinced Rad Power Bikes offers the best value I have found.

The RadRover, for example, costs $1599, meanwhile over at REI you can buy a cargo eBike for almost $5000. I think I’ll take the 3 grand I saved, and buy another Rover.

Things to Know Before Buying Your Rad Power Bike

When you officially place your order, there are a few things you may want to know before your bike arrives.

This includes the following:

1. Some Assembly Required

unboxing the Rad Rover

There is some assembly required before you can start riding your new Rad Power Bike. Depending on which bike you decide to buy, there may be more or less set up that you’ll have to do.

The Rover, for example, was much quicker to put together than the RadWagon, because there are just more parts and accessories to install on the Wagon.

For the most part, though, setting up your new Rad Power Bike should be pretty quick and easy, and they even have YouTube videos that can help guide you through the process.

I would say it can easily be done in an hour or less for most bikes, but you may want to set a couple of hours aside, just you don’t feel like you have to rush through the assembly process.

If you feel like you don’t know what you’re doing, you can also have a bike shop do the assembly for you.

The bikes come with disk brakes, which is standard on most eBikes, but I wasn’t really that comfortable messing with them, so I took our bikes in to a local shop to make sure everything was dialed in before taking them on a ride.

2. You’ll Probably Need Some Accessories

While your new bike is pretty much ready to go once you’ve set it up, there are some things you may want to buy make it fully decked out to fit your riding and commuting needs.

This will be different for every bike, so just check out their accessory page to get an idea of some of things you may want to buy – cargo racks, saddlebags, and fenders are just a few things that come to mind.

The RadWagon, for example, comes with fenders, buy the RadRover doesn’t, so I had to purchase those separately.

There were also things I needed for the Wagon, before we could have the kids ride – this included the caboose, a pad for our older daughter to sit on, and the Yepp child seat and mounting bracket.

Most of what you need can be purchased right on the Rad Power Bike website, but I was also able to find some things on Amazon, and even locally.

Bottom Line – Get a Rad, It can Change Your Life

rounding the bend on our Wagon in Glacier

My Rad Power Bikes are honestly the best investment I’ve made in a long time, and they have improved our lives in so many different ways – no joke.

Here are just a few examples of the positive impact our Rad Power Bikes have had on our family:

1.  We Can Go on Long Biking Adventures with Our Daughters

Prior to having the Rad Wagon, I never would have considered making the 6 mile trek from our house to the waterpark on a bike. The distance isn’t the biggest issue, it was the fact that our entire journey home is up hill.

Now, we don’t even think twice about loading up the RadWagon, and heading into town with both girls in tow.

2. I Bike to Work Almost Every Day

Again, I could do this without an eBike, but having the Rad Rover is way too much fun, plus I can get to work just as fast as I would in my truck. My commute now involves a trek over a creek, through the woods, and lots of backroads to the office – MUCH better than being stuck in the gridlock of the typical daily commute.

Even though you’re getting some pedal assist from the Rad, you can still get some good exercise from your eBike commute too, which is another nice bonus.

my family and I stopped on Going to the Sun Road in Glacier

I realized the other day, it had been over a month since I had gassed up my truck – normally I have to get gas once a week, but that’s not the case anymore, thanks to my RadRover.

3. Our Whole Family Made it Up Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park

Our ability to go on biking adventures as a family has to be the biggest benefit we’ve gotten from our Rad Power Bikes so far.

Scaling Going-to-the-Sun Road has been the highlight of these adventures- If you haven’t seen this road in person, it’s worth a visit – easily one of the most spectacular views on the planet, and even better from a bike!

The best part is, we were able to make it up the entire road and back to our truck on a single charge! That’s pretty awesome, when you consider we were hauling and extra 70 pounds on the RadRover!
