Do you ever get sick and tired and being sick and tired? I think we all know that feeling and phrase.
Luckily, if you’ve been dealing with irregularity and have been looking for a way to feel better, there are some natural supplements out there, that may be able to help.
Triphala is one of them, and it has been getting a lot of attention lately, so we thought it was time to take a closer look at this stuff to see what it’s really all about and decide whether or not it is something that may be able to help.
What is Triphala: A (Brief) History Lesson
Triphala has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for many years now, and its name literally translates to “three fruits.”
The Triphala formulation is an herbal mixture from, you guessed it, three different fruits that are traditionally found in India.
These fruits are haritaki, bibhitaki, and amalaki – if you think those are hard to pronounce, you should see their scientific names ;-).
Since there’s a pretty good chance most us have no clue what these fruits actually are, let’s take a quick look at each of them, so you know what you’re putting into your body:
Known as Emblica Officinalis in scientific circles, Amalaki helps to support the liver’s natural functions, while also supporting the immune system.
This fruit targets your kapha while also helping your respiratory system as well.
Helpful in removing toxins and maintaining a healthy weight, Terminalia chebula hits all three of the all-important Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Live by the Dosha, Die by the Dosha
What’s a Dosha, you ask.
This is a term used in Ayurvedic medicine and represents each of the three energies that are believed to circulate through your body, governing physiological activity.
You can sort of think of them this way: Vata is an “airy element,” Kapha is the “watery element,” and Pitta is the “fiery” one.
According to Ayurvedic teachings, the three Doshas are somewhat unstable and are constantly fluctuating. They can change throughout the day and are even affected by the food you eat.
By following the Ayurvedic philosophy, you can maintain optimal health by keeping your Dosha in balance, and fortunately, Triphala is one supplement that can help wrangle them in.
With so much going on in our busy lives, how can we possibly tame our feisty Dosha?
Luckily, the three Triphala fruits can help regulate each area, and they work together to provide your body with a trifecta of benefits.
Amalaki helps with your pitta, Bibhitaki regulates kapha, while Haritaki targets all three.
This sounds great on paper, but what does this actually mean for any benefits you might be able to expect when taking Triphala?

While Triphala reportedly offers benefits with all of the bullets listed above, the most common use is as a “bowel tonic.”
That means, helping improve your digestive function, and supporting regularity – AKA, having more normal bowel movements.
It sounds as though it has a similar effect as probiotics, although I’m not sure if one works better than the other.
Does Triphala Help with Weight Loss?
In some cases, Triphala has also been used as a diet supplement, and I’d bet dollars to donuts that Dr. Oz has featured a segment on it. It is typically taken alongside a healthy diet and proper exercise program for the best results.
This being said, I don’t think you can expect to take a Triphala pill and watch the weight magically fall off – you’ll have to work for it.
What Type Should You Buy? Tea, Liquid Extract, or Tablets?
While Triphala has traditionally been used in tea, you can also buy liquid extract or tablets.
Traditionalists prefer the tea method because they can get a full taste of the herbal remedy, and as some of you may know, taste is considered to be an important part of any healing process, under Ayurveda teachings.
To make the tea, you will need to buy Triphala in powdered form, and then follow the label instructions for how much of the powder you will need for each serving.
For those of you who don’t need to stick to the Ayurveda script, and may just be looking for a digestive aid, then the tablets may be the way to go – especially if you aren’t used to the herbal flavor, or just prefer to take things in pill form.
The pills are usually taken before bedtime, or first thing in the morning. You’ll typically take two capsules, but follow the labeling instructions for whichever supplement you decide to buy.
The liquid drops have a couple of advantages – a bottle usually has a very long shelf life if stored properly, and it easily assimilates with your body.
You can take it with juice or water, or even mix it in with your favorite tea. Again, follow the manufacturer guidelines regarding how much you should take, and how often you should be taking it.
I haven’t found a super reliable resource online about the potential side effects from taking Triphala (no luck at WebMD, either), but there were a few factors that need to be mentioned.
According to Ayurvedic teachings, Triphala should not be taken by women who are pregnant or nursing, so avoid it if you fall into either of these categories.
This is typically good advice to take when it comes to pretty much any supplement.
If you have a medical condition or are taking medications, you should talk to your doctor before taking this or any other health supplement.
Beyond that, it is suggested to avoid Triphala if you are experiencing diarrhea. Large doses can cause loose stool, so follow the dosing guidelines closely. Some people have also reported having gas or upset stomach when taking this stuff.

The Organic India brand had one of the largest review samples that I was able to find, with more than 720 reviewers weighing in. It’s currently rated at 4.3 out of 5 stars, with 69% of reviewers leaving 5-star feedback.
